JOB TITLE: Bus Mechanic
REPORTS TO: Transportation Director/Superintendent
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Have a thorough understanding and working knowledge of mechanics in order to be able to repair
buses, vans, cars, and pickups.
2. Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the Central Office (after employment offer is made).
3. Preferred: Five years of experience in the mechanical field.
4. Must hold a valid Class B, Kansas Driver’s License with Passenger and School Bus endorsements within
2 months of employment.
5. Desire to continue career improvement by enhancing skills and job performance.
JOB GOAL:
Maintain the operation of the bus barn/garage and keep district vehicles in such a state of operating
excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Be responsible for diagnosing and repairing district automotive equipment.
2. Be responsible for the over-all operation of the garage.
3. Establish an efficient and effective system of routine automotive maintenance and preventive care.
4. Operate all equipment and machinery safely and appropriately as necessary.
5. Keep current on new information, innovative ideas and techniques.
6. Promote and maintain high standards of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work-
connected areas.
7. Set an example for safe and quality work.
8. Ensure all activities conform to district guidelines.
9. Communicate and work effectively and cooperatively with members of the school district and
community.
10. React to change and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner, meeting deadlines
as assigned.
11. Work to implement the vision and mission of the district.
12. Observe and follow all school district policies at all times.
13. Respond to information requests in a cooperative, courteous, and timely manner.
14. Keep information and records confidential.
15. Implement and follow all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the
Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
16. Complete and maintain paperwork for yearly reporting. This includes, but not limited to: Monthly
fuel usage, odometer reading at the end of each month, trip logs for vans/pickups, and pre-trip
inspections.
17. Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Transportation Director or
Superintendent.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
1. Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
2. Ability to manually lift 60 pounds.
3. Requires stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, climbing, balancing, and reaching.
4. Must work indoors and outdoors year-round.
5. Must occasionally work in noisy environments, with numerous interruptions.
6. Must work in and around dust, fumes, and odors.
